Etymology

cp. OIcel skærr ‘bright, clear, pure’, usually now derived < PGmc *skairi- (or *skairja-); there are no exact cognates beyond ON, but it should probably be connected to *skīr- (OE scīr ‘shining’, OIcel skírr, Go skeirs, OFris skīre, OS scīr(i), MHG schīr).
