trayst

adj.

'sure' (Modern English traist)

Etymology

An adjectival formation on the stem of VAN *trøysta, cp. OIcel treysta ‘to make trusty, try the strength of a thing’, treystask ‘to trust (to), rely upon’ < PGmc *traustjan- (cp. OS trōstian, OHG trōsten ‘to console’); perhaps directly from the ON pp. (cp. OIcel treystr, thus OED), or alternatively a reworking of the related ON adj. (OIcel traustr, ‘trusty, sure’) in ME under the influence of the verb (thus TGD). See further tryst, trystyly.
