Etymology

Formed on the same stem as rapes; cp. the adj. Sw dial. rap, rapp ‘quick’ and the adv. OIcel hrapalliga ‘hurriedly, headlong’ (< *hrap- perhaps via the noun hrapaðr ‘hurry’ or an adj. *hrapall; see Mag.).
