lante

v. (past)

Cl past 2 sg. lanteʒ; Erk pp. lant; WA pp. lante

'gave, lent' (Modern English lend)

Etymology

Most scholars accept a native origin for this form, i.e. OE lǣnan ‘to lend’ with regular shortening of OE Angl. /æ:/ (PGmc *laixwn-) > ME /a/ (see e.g. TGD p. 135). MED is alone in adducing some ON input, presumably in order to account for ME spellings in <a> (which are found (rarely) in the pres. as well as the pret.) and (more compellingly) in <o>; it compares the ON wk. 2 v., cp. OIcel lána ‘to lend’, but for that matter there could conceivably have been some influence on the vocalism of the ME v. from the ME n. lōn(e (early ME lān), which is usually derived from ON lán ‘loan’.
