Etymology

Always derived from ON, cp. morkna 'to become rotten', formed on morkinn 'rotten', cp. MHG murc 'rotten'; related to OIr meirc 'rust' from PIE *mer-g-, and further to the base *mer-k- in Lat marcēre 'wither'.
