Etymology

Some degree of Scandinavian input is usually adduced for this n., securely in forms with spellings indicating /ð/ < PGmc /ð/. Forms with /d/ also occur, e.g. late OE tīdung 'events, tidings, news' which could be analysed as a native formation on tīdan 'to betide, happen' (see further SPS 406-7; for other formations on this root, see Kroonen). Even if ult. modelled on the ON complex, cp OIcel tíðindi 'tidings, news, events' (< PGmc *tīði- 'time', cp. OIcel ), other ME forms show subsitution of native forms tīd and -ing for either or both elements, e.g. <tidende, tiðing, tiðende> (Dance 2003: 96).
