Etymology

This rare v. is always derived from ON, cp. OIcel brigzla 'to upbraid, reproach, deride'. This v. is unique to ON, but ultimately derived (together with the n. brigzl(i) (fem. or neut.) 'aspersion, dishonour') on the common Gmc v. *bregđan- (cp. OE bregdan 'to move quickly, pull, shake, swing, throw, etc.', OIcel bregða 'to move swiftly', OFris breida, OHG brettan 'to pull, tug' etc.).
