Always derived from ON, cp. OIcel hella 'to pour out' < PGmc*xalþjan-, from the adj. base *xalþ- 'sloping, inclined' (pp. of unattested st. v. *xalan-), cp. OE (ge-)hieldan 'lean, incline, slope', OS af-hel-dian 'cease, decline', OHG gi-helden 'incline, tilt' derived from the adj. *xalþa- 'sloping, inclined' (pp. of unattested st. v. *xalan-).
