Etymology

Always derived from ON, cp. kynda 'kindle, light a fire' < a PGmc wk. v. *kunđjan- (cp. MHG künten 'kindle') of obscure ult. etymology (see further Kroonen). The more common ME reflex is kindelen (see kindill (v.)).
