scutis

v. (pres. pl.)

'jut out'

(Modern English scoot)

Etymology

Cp. OIcel skúta ‘jut out’, formed on PGmc *skeutan- ‘shoot’, cp. OIcel skjóta, OE scēotan ‘to shoot’, OFris skiata, OS skiotan, OHG skiozan. The absence of initial palatalization of /sk/ is a secure test of loan, and the sense of the word in WA, describing rocks, accords better with the OIcel. See also scowtes (n.).
