Etymology

cp. OIcel geta without palatalization of /ɡ/ < PGmc. *getan- ‘to get; beget’; cp. OE (WS) -gietan, -gitan, -gytan, (Angl) -getan ‘to get, obtain’, Go (bi-)gitan, OFris -ieta, OS -getan, OHG -gezzan.  The OE v. is very rare (and generally late) as a simplex (see DOE s.v. gytan), but it is found in a number of frequent prefixed forms, esp. begietan, forgietan, ongietan.

PS introduce a further instance of the v. at Gaw 1255, by emending MS <þat þt> to *gat þat. MS A reading <getis> at WA 2468 is always emended for metrical reasons to follow the D MS reading <nemmys>.
