Either formed from OE for + gart (v.) or, as suggested by MED and EVG (and Goll, who also compares gare), directly from ON cp. OIcel fyrirgøra (cp. OEN forgøra, OWN fyrgøra) ‘to forfeit’. See further gareʒ (v.).
