thristis

v. (pres. pl.)

WA pres. sg. thristezthrist, past sg. thrast, past pl. thristid

'thrust, pierce' (Modern English thrust)

Etymology

Always derived from ON, cp. the OIcel wk. v. þrýsta 'thrust, press, force, compell' < PGmc *þrūstjan- (cp. OHG drūsten 'thrust'). No cognate v. survives in OE, but a pp. ā-þrūten 'swollen' from the related strong v. *þrūtan (cp. OIcel þrútinn 'swollen, oppressed' and further Lat trūdō 'push') is attested. OE geþryscan 'press, oppress' is usually also related to these verbs.
